This guide presents the fish, crustaceans and marine mammals of the Tahiti lagoon and its islands: what they look like, their names in English, Latin and Tahitian (reo Tahiti), and what the people of the fenua say about them.
Sources
- Tahitian names: TAXREF vernacular database (INPN / Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle) for the Society Islands, based on the work of J.E. Randall. When no name is published, we say so instead of inventing one.
- Scientific names: checked against GBIF / WoRMS.
- Photos: Wikimedia Commons (free licences, authors credited below) and visitor photos (CC BY-SA 4.0), after automatic checking.
- Legends and stories: Polynesian traditions reported by reference books and websites; the source is cited under each story.
