Description

  • 📏 up to 40 cm
  • 🌊 burrows in sand and coral rubble

The zebra mantis shrimp (or stomatopod) is a formidable-looking crustacean: an elongated body striped with black and white, mobile eyes and two raptorial appendages, folded like those of a praying mantis. It lives in a burrow that it hardly leaves, and surprises its prey with a lightning-fast strike. It often forms faithful pairs.

Did you know?

Mantis shrimps have one of the fastest strikes in the animal kingdom. It is best never to touch them by hand.
