Description

  • 📏 up to 90 cm
  • 🌊 outer slopes, passes, drop-offs

The red bass is a large, massive snapper, red-brown and silvery. It hunts small fish near drop-offs. Large individuals, predators at the top of the food chain, often carry ciguatera.

In island life

In Polynesia, ciguatera is well known: fishermen and residents avoid eating large snappers, notably the red bass (haʻamea in Tahitian), in risk areas.
