The bigeye emperor is recognised by its enormous eye, its red-lipped mouth and its round, molar-like teeth that crush shellfish and crustaceans. It frequents the lagoon by day and hunts at night.

In Tahitian it is the mu. Its huge eye helps it find its way at night while looking for food.
