The adult emperor angelfish is blue, striped with yellow, with a dark blue mask over the eyes. The juvenile looks completely different: dark blue, decorated with concentric white circles, which helps it avoid being attacked by territorial adults. It feeds on sponges and tunicates.

Did you know?

Juvenile and adult are so different that naturalists long took them for two distinct species. In Tahitian it is called paraharaha.
