The humpback red snapper has an arched back and a notched tail. It forms large schools that rest by day near drop-offs and wrecks, then hunt at night. Its colour varies from pinkish-grey to red.

Its Tahitian name is taea (or tuhara). The English name « paddletail » comes from the shape of its tail.
