The glasseye is a red fish with big eyes that hides by day in cavities of the reef. At night it comes out to hunt, and its colour changes from plain red to silver-barred.

In Tahitian it is called maere (Tahiti) or uvene (Leeward Islands). Its big eyes help it see in the dim light.
