The bluefin trevally is adorned with small electric-blue spots on its back and bright blue fins, which turn yellow in the young. A fast hunter, it chases small fish along the edge of the reef. It is highly sought after by fishermen.

In Tahitian it is called paʻaihere (or pahuru ninamu). Like other large trevallies, it can be affected by ciguatera in certain areas.
