The dogtooth tuna is one of the biggest predators of the reef. Streamlined, dark blue on the back and silver underneath, it shows large conical teeth that gave it its name. It hunts at high speed, alone or in small groups, near drop-offs.

In Tahitian its name is vaʻu. Polynesian fishermen know its flesh is firm and that catching it is a challenge: it is a powerful fish.
