Description

  • 📏 up to 1 m including arms
  • 🌊 reef flats and shallow reef slopes

The day octopus (feʻe) hunts during the day on the reef flat, which is unusual for octopuses. It changes colour and texture in seconds to blend into the coral. It feeds on crabs, shellfish and small fish.

In island life

Fishing for feʻe is done at low tide, by hand or with a spear: octopus is a much-loved dish, prepared in coconut milk or as ʻiʻa ota.
