Description

  • 📏 up to 70 cm
  • 🌊 reef flats and sandy bottoms, crevices
  • 🛡️ Near Threatened (IUCN)

The bluespotted ribbontail ray is easy to recognise: an oval beige disc with large turquoise spots, and a tail striped with blue. By day it hides under ledges and coral heads, then hunts on the sand. It has venomous spines on its tail and stays calm if not disturbed.

Did you know?

It is often discovered while snorkelling: sometimes only its bluish tail sticks out from under a coral head.
